Northeast Ohio Photographer | comparison is a dirty little word

Dear Creative Soul

“Do you sometimes feel your progress is slow? Do you sometimes blame yourself for not being talented enough, and not doing enough with your career? Oftentimes the reason we struggle with insecurity is because we compare our behind-the-scenes circumstances with everyone else’s public highlight reel. Forget what everyone else is doing and achieving. Your life is about breaking your own limits and outgrowing yourself to live YOUR best life. The ONLY photographer you should compare yourself with is the one you used to be!”- Christina Greve

I recently stumbled across Christina’s words about comparison and it hit me like a ton of bricks. She said it perfectly. So I left it alone and decided to share.

com·par·i·son
kəmˈperəsən/
noun
noun: comparison; plural noun: comparisons
  1. 1.
the act or instance of comparing.

We all start somewhere. And 9 times out of 10 that beginning point isn’t pretty. What’s important is that we keep moving. Striving. Working. Learning. Improving. Perfecting. That’s a good point above. What we see from other photographer’s is their highlight reel. We don’t see the imperfect photos that they deleted. We don’t usually see our neighbor’s stressful day. Social Media has been both a blessing and a curse to the way we view the world. We post the best of the best because we want to show that off. We enjoy showing everyone how happy we are and “Hey look at this perfect photo I just took of this adorable new baby?!” And then when we turn around and view our own work, culling a session and we think “Ew. Look at these photos that didn’t turn out. I had something in mind but I couldn’t get the baby to cooperate. This is my fault. My photos aren’t as good as ____. They’re perfect. They were always perfect. I’m sure of it. I’ll never be as good as ____.” Sound familiar? Yeah. I thought so.

So why don’t we put a stop to it all? Every award winning movie star was once a struggling actor. Every great author once was embarrassed to let someone read a chapter out of her scribbles. Every athlete was once out of shape. The same goes for us. Every amazing photographer you see was once just first picking up a camera. It’s a process. Enjoy it! Pick up your camera every day. Keep practicing. Keep moving forward. STOP COMPARING!! Comparison is the thief of joy. The only photographer you should be comparing yourself to is the photographer you used to be. I tell myself this almost daily as a reminder.

637867d6486e351d407d82470ee4a2ac

Want some photo proof that it gets better? Look at my editing too… even that changes drastically as I’ve grown and learned more about Photoshop and post processing. I am thankful for every stepping stone I’ve had in this journey. 🙂

(PS – All of the before photos are of my own babies 🙂 )

Tuscarawas & Stark County OH Red Thread Adoption Photographer | NE Ohio

There is an ancient Chinese proverb that says, “An invisible red thread connects those who are destined to meet, regardless of time, place or circumstances. The thread may stretch or tangle, but will never break.”

I feel like not many people are aware of this program available to new parents who are adopting or the fact that there are 100’s of photographers nationwide who offer their services, love and time for this organization.

This is taken from Red Thread Session’s website:

About Red Thread Sessions

Red Thread Sessions was started in 2011 by two custom photographers in Texas and Maryland, both whom added to their families through adoption. Feeling the need in their communities to celebrate the beauty of adoption through photography, Red Thread Sessions was born. Soon after, many other photographers throughout the U.S. felt moved to donate their time as well. Red Thread sessions not only captures family portraits of new families, it also capture the precious, happy, confusing, exciting, exhausting, traumatic, life-changing time that is so often brief and fleeting in the life of an adoptive family.

Why “Red Thread” Sessions?

The Ancient Chinese Proverb is a commonly-used saying within the adoption community. It symbolizes the bond that all adoptive children have with their adoptive parents, even before they meet. An invisible “red thread” connects them to the people they are destined to meet. Although this Proverb truly relates to all people, it has a particularly strong connection to adoptive families and seemed like the perfect name for this organization.

I wanted to also take a few moments and explain why I became a Red Thread Photographer. Even though my husband and I have never adopted, it’s always been something deep on my heart and I find myself drawn to families who’ve adopted. When I was a little girl, my Barbie dolls always had at least 1 family who adopted. I imagine this originally came from my Aunt and Uncle adopting all of their babies, 4 in all, and from all different backgrounds and reasons. I love each and every one of their stories. I also have friends who were adopted and other friends who have adopted or are planning to adopt. I love the heart behind it. The love. The instant bond that makes you a family. It doesn’t matter how you became a family. Just that you ARE. And that right there is why I became a Red Thread Session Photographer. My extended family is made up of all kinds from all over. Some were born into. Some were adopted. Some have been from a divorced family and their father or mother married into our family and we gained cousins and Aunt’s and Uncle’s. I have half siblings and it doesn’t make a difference how I feel about them. Family is family no matter how they arrived. ❤

All that being said, these sessions are free (travel fee’s may apply) and are limited to how many I can accept each year!! In order to comply with the Red Thread guidelines, the adoption session needs to be completed within 3 months of the child coming home (barring any unusual situations where health complications prohibit that from happening). If you are planning to adopt in 2015, or know of someone else who is, and want to reserve a time for one of these sessions please contact me. I offer a free session, your choice of 5 digital images selected from your finished proof gallery and a set of 4×6 proof images with a 15% discount on any optional print/product purchases. Or you can choose one of my full sessions at a 50% discount. View investment information here regarding baby’s first year plans as well as maternity and family session information. Dover New Philadelphia OH baby photographer | finn’s 7 month studio session

Hello Finn! We meet again. I look forward to this baby boy’s milestone sessions every few months. His Momma shares my love of simplicity and keeping the focus solely on baby. ❤ I mean, who can improve on his sweetness?! 🙂 To prove it to you, you can go here to view his newborn session. We did do an adorable photo to incorporate his big brother’s love of baseball in Finn’s newborn portraits. We plan on trying something with them again for his 9 month shoot to show how much he’s grown! ❤ I do love showing baby’s growth and recreating photos in that way. I’m looking forward to it and it’s a great keepsake for parents to have.

Mineral City OH newborn baby & family photographer | 5 days new Juliana

This adorable baby girl’s Daddy works with my husband (okay, my husband sorta works for her Dad but shhhhhh don’t tell my husband that 😉 LOL). Not only that, but her parents are also friends. That makes the best kind of client. They came from Mineral City to visit my studio back in December. They even bought me lunch. Win win for me! Oh and Juliana’s father is also a Dennison cop… so the boys had better watch out when she grows up! 🙂

Dover New Philadelphia OH Photographer | Project 52 | imagination

Oh my word!!! This is a FUN theme!!! You’re for sure going to want to check out ALL of our blogs this week!!! 🙂

I really hadn’t messed around with this type of Photoshopping images so this took some playing and learning on my part. I love that it really pushed me out of my comfort zone!!

The first image I attempted was my oldest daughter, Emma, and her books. She LOVES to read so we wanted to document her in this stage. Her composite was fairly simple. I took a shot of the books stacked up and then I photographed her sitting on a stool and I combined the 2 with some behind the scenes Photoshop magic. 😉 She is so excited about her finished photo that she’s asked if I could print it as a poster for her bedroom. How fun!

New Philadelphia Ohio childrens photographer 44663 | © Brandi Williamson Photography | www.brandiwilliamsonphotography.com | Project 52: ImaginationLiam’s photo was quite a lot more difficult. First off, he’s 3 and he’s very much not a fan of my camera. He refused to wear the clothes I chose for him. And we ended up changing up the entire idea and instead went with whatever he decided to do. Isn’t that the typical life with a toddler? LOL I do love the end result though!! Don’t you? He giggles every time that he sees it too and says “Oh I’m small Liam! Look Mommy! That dolphin’s gonna gobble my fishie! Stay awayyyyyy shark! Oh no!” And then all of that is typically followed by “Let’s go! I want a bubble bath please!!!” Love this little boy and his fun imagination!!New Philadelphia Ohio childrens photographer 44663 | © Brandi Williamson Photography | www.brandiwilliamsonphotography.com | Project 52: ImaginationIzzy Grace’s chalkboard image was the last one we got around to finishing. She and I discussed what we wanted to do at the beginning of the week but things kept happening and we would put it off another day for one reason or another. (Kind of like the same reason I have yet to call the Preschool up again to set up another date for a tour for Liam?! OOPS!). Isabella’s photo was a lot of fun to execute!! I knew that I didn’t want a generic chalkboard stock image in the background. I wanted it to be HER drawing. So she set to work on that this morning. Then immediately following a studio session on Saturday morning, I told her we would photograph her “flying”. And of course we needed to add in her beloved Duffy Bear who goes everywhere else with her. It’s only natural he would go on a flying adventure through her chalkboard drawing wonderland too!!! 😛Dover Ohio 44622 New Philadelphia Ohio childrens photographer 44663 | © Brandi Williamson Photography | www.brandiwilliamsonphotography.com | Project 52: Imagination

Dover New Philadelphia OH Photographer | Project 52 | selfie!

week 5 | selfie

It arrived. The week I was dreading. This week’s Finding Me: Project 52 theme is “YOU: selfie”. Don’t get me wrong, I love cell phone selfies. I take selfies with my kids or husband (does that count?), selfies with coffee, selfies with sunshine, selfies with new hair color or a cute style and whatever other random selfie mood might take over. But to take a selfie with my big girl camera… AND post it to my blog for everyone to see?! That’s different for some reason. It just IS! Thoughts ran through my mind…. “Be careful with the angle! Don’t show your double chin!” “Should I put more make-up on?” “Um I’m still holding my coffee cup….” “What about those dark circles and my scars?! Maybe I should edit those out…”

In the end I left all of it. I didn’t add anymore make-up than what I normally wear on a typical day. I left my dark circles because they tell a story of my life right now. Yes I have sleepless nights. I work late. I have 3 kids. I still have nightmares of my past. I have nightmares of what my mind makes up and the “what if….” takes over. Sometimes I just want to sit with my husband on the couch and mindlessly stare at the TV late into the night. Then I wake up early to start the day and get the kids dressed, fed and out the door to school. I left my scars because they tell a story of my past and what has helped shape me into who I am today. Do I feel beautiful? No. Do I feel like I look how I want to look? Absolutely not. Am I okay with all of this? Yes. I am more than okay with it. I am happy. I am blessed. I am loved. And that is beautiful. That is me.

Don’t forget this is our Finding Me: Project 52 blog circle. Visit Sarah Jastre Photography and see her take on this week’s theme. Please click through all of our links and leave us some love by liking and commenting on our posts, especially this week as it turns out selfie week was a difficult one for ALL of us to go through with. In discussing this week’s theme with each-other, we laughed, we cringed, we lifted each-other up, we cried, we criticized our bodies and we boosted each-other’s confidence. Why is it that we can so easily see the beauty in someone else but not ourselves? We, as a society, need to work on this. Let’s begin today.

New Philadelphia Dover OH Twin Newborn & Baby Photographer | twin blessings

While one baby can be difficult at times to pose and photograph, imagine photographing 2 babies! 😛 These twin babies are so gorgeous and snugly that I didn’t mind one bit. My approach to a twin newborn session is more simple and sweet. I aim to photograph the babies in natural and organic poses to keep the babies peaceful and comfortable. I call this shoot a win! Thank you Ashley for bringing in your precious babies and letting me play, snuggle and photograph them!!!

Dover, New Philadelphia OH toddler photographer | my liam is 3

This boy. He has all of us wrapped around his tiny skinny little fingers. ❤ The problem is, he knows it. 😉 He knows that we think he is just the funniest, cutest, silliest, smartest little boy in the world. And that, my friends, can be an issue. 😛 I mean, try saying no to him. It’s not easy. Don’t get me wrong, he hears the word plenty… PLENTY. He is just as rotten and ornery as he is adorable. 🙂 We wouldn’t trade him for the world! Liam James, you’ve completed our family and we all love you so much! Happy 3rd birthday baby! (okay, he turned 3 in September… but at least these photos were taken in October… that’s not too shabby for a photographer’s kid to have photos!) 😛

Oh and would you believe these photos were taken in approximately 3 minutes time (he had to pee LOL), and were at a random pull off on the side of the road that I deemed had appropriately pretty light? Well, it’s true. Sometimes they’re the best locations and shoots honestly! Quick and to the point!

The totally rockin’ awesome cool tee is from KATEKATIE. Please stop by and tell them I sent you!! 🙂
